Emery enters the room, offering a firm handshake.
EMERY: Hello, there. It's a pleasure to meet you.
AD: Have we met before? You look familiar.
EMERY: No, definitely not. Believe me, I would remember. I never forget a face.
AD: So, Emery, what do you do?
EMERY: Well, I retired several years back. (He smiles coyly when I say he looks too young to be retired). Thank you, you're too kind.
Nevertheless, I retired from my career as a homicide detective and have since taken to writing fiction crime novels. I also consult on occasion to the Denver Criminal Investigations Division.
AD: Are you consulting on any cases at the moment?
EMERY: I'm sorry, those details are classified.
My accent? Yes, it's British. I grew up in London, actually. Goodness, it seems like many moons ago now since I lived there.
That's where I met my wife, Rebecca, on the walking track, in the gardens near Buckingham Palace. She was the most luminous creature I'd ever seen and hasn't aged a day since. (He stares to the side glassy-eyed, faraway, as if he's reminiscing).
(Smiling) Rebecca is one of those people who tread lightly on the earth. I remember quite literally, wondering if she left a footprint. I glanced back along the trail. She did.
AD: Your home is beautiful. I understand it's newly built?
EMERY: Yes, Rebecca and Lily came to Evergreen a few months ago, to oversee the final building stages of the house and garden. Rebecca likes to have the home ready before all the family arrives. It's important to her that everyone is comfortable in their surroundings.
AD: Why is that?
EMERY: Oh, she's just a nurturing soul (smiles proudly). Gil designed the house. He did a marvelous job, don't you think?
AD: Yes, it's amazing. It's so natural and light, it almost feels like we're outside.
EMERY: Yes, it's built with the earth in mind. It's environmentally friendly and has a sense of nature, inside and out.
I should get back to work, if you think of anything else you'd like to ask, give me a call. (He hands me a business card).
AD: Thanks so much, Emery.
EMERY: You're most welcome. It's lovely to meet you. (He sees me to the front door). Drive safe.
